More than Conquerors
Some Bible truths evoke more excitement than others. I taught a workshop recently called “Who am I?” and listed on a whiteboard several words that define who we are in Christ, such as “child of God,” “ambassador,” “witness,” “salt and light,” and “new creation.” I did the same workshop three times that night, and each time, when I got to “more than conquerors,” I heard a loud “Woo!” from the women.
We love those words, don’t we? Even if we don’t know the context in which “more than conquerors” appears in Scripture, it just sounds good all by itself. There’s invincibility in it. Victory. The idea that nothing can stop us. Given that life can present a series of trials and disappointments, it gives us hope and strength and even joy to know that through it all—despite it all—we are still more than conquerors.
But let’s look a little deeper at the passage, because it gets even more exciting. This is the question that’s asked beforehand: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?” (Romans 8:35 NIV) When those trials, disappointments, and worse come, temptation comes along with it. We’re tempted to think we’re alone, that God doesn’t care, that things will never get better, that we must have done something to deserve it. If it’s our sin that caused the distress, we may think we’ve cut ourselves off permanently from God, or that He’s cut us off. We may be tempted to think there’s no going back.
But this is God’s answer: “No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37). In other words, it may feel like we’re being conquered by our situation, but the truth is that in Christ, we are able to more than conquer the situation. How is that possible? It’s possible because we have God’s assurance that He will not only see us through, He will make us stronger as we go through. It’s about more than the particular situation. It’s about growing closer to God in the midst, understanding that He is sovereign and that whatever He’s allowed into our lives is for our good and His glory. It’s about growing in confidence that He will work all things together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28), which, in turn, grows our faith.
Like the Energizer Bunny, we can keep going and going and going, no matter what comes our way, stronger and stronger, because Jesus has already given us the victory. And His love will never fail us.
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).
Are you in a trying place? Do you wonder whether God is there? Nothing can separate you from His love. Nothing. He is yours and you are His. Through His deep, eternal love—no matter the difficulty—you will more than conquer.
Heavenly Father, thank You that Your love is never failing, that nothing—no demon from hell and not even death—can separate me from You and Your love. Thank You for Your promise that I am more than a conqueror through Christ. Help me to walk in the knowledge of that truth, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

One Response to “More than Conquerors”
I think this may have sent this to me awhile back to read, but I know I needed this today. It was one of those “I think I should have stayed in bed” kind of days. While church is thought of as a safe place, I even had that tested today. It seems as if satan will just go anywhere.
This is probably at least the second time the verse Romans 8:28 has crossed my path over the last few days. Actually, aside from John 3:16, it was one of the first verses I remember learning. A teacher taught me it in high school. It has always told me that it doesn’t matter what happens in my life, God is going to turn it into good. He’ll carry me through the storm to see the rainbow on the other side.
I love the thought of being “more than conquerors”. When I think of the word conquer, I think of words like won, over, done, or finished. However, for us, living in Christ, it will never be over, done, or ended. How amazing is it to think that once we have “conquered” this world there is so much more waiting for us!
Wow, I am getting so excited as I continue to go through this website of yours! It just makes me even more hungry to learn all I can about the Word!
